ILLINOIS STATE MVC CHAMPIONSHIPS151 and CountingAthletics success at Illinois State is broad-based. With 19 intercollegiate sports, the Redbird program constitutes one of the largest in the Midwest. With 149 league titles since 1982, it also represents one of the most successful. Illinois State began its athletics program more than 100 years ago and the winning began simultaneously. The school, which had already been an NCAA Division I competitor for more than a decade, left behind its independent status during the 1981-82 school year and affiliated itself with conference play. Today, 17 of the 19 Redbird sports compete in the Missouri Valley Conference, the oldest collegiate league west of the Mississippi River. Illinois State has won the Missouri Valley Conference's All-Sports title 12 times since 1985, and with the six Gateway All-Sport championships, has claimed 18 since 1983. The Redbirds have finished in the top-five of the Valley's All-Sports race for 31-straight years and have finished first, second or third in 22 of the past 23 years. In 2013, ISU won titles in soccer (Valley tournament), women's cross country, women's golf, and baseball (regular-season), leading to a second-place finish in the All-Sports trophy run with a score of 3.382.
