Poised to defend...what winning the Barker GMC Classic meant to the 2004 Redbirds

During our careers as Redbird volleyball players we had never won our home tournament, the Barker GMC Classic. We went into the 2004 tournament focusing on each individual game, and our focus and determination helped us win the tournament. It was great to finally win a tournament on our home floor in front of our fans. Even though it was her first college tournament, Kari Staehlin earned MVP honors.

Winning the Barker tournament gave us confidence and a small glimpse of the successful season to come. We finished 22-9 and improved our win total for the second straight year.

After playing in front of almost 3,500 fans last weekend against Illinois, our team knows we have the support from our Redbird family to defend our title in the Barker tournament. Our first home match of this season shows that there is no place better for volleyball than Redbird Arena. We are going into this weekend focused on playing Redbird volleyball. By staying focused on the task at hand and playing consistently, we will have the chance to once again be the champions of the Barker GMC Classic.
