Rosch, Early, Hlafka Earn MVC Scholar-Athlete Honors

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State sophomore Ashley Rosch, junior Kaitlyn Early and senior Brooklyn Hlafka were honored by the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) as Scholar-Athlete selections, as announced by the league office Tuesday. Rosch and Early were selected to the Scholar-Athlete first-team, while Hlafka received her second career honorable mention.
Rosch leads the Redbirds on the season with 356 kills, averaging 3.13 kills per set. The Fox River Grove, Ill., native also ranks third on the team in digs (271), third in service aces (22) and fourth in total blocks (49). Rosch set career-highs this season with six block assists against Bradley and service aces with four against Evansville, Nov. 17. The outside hitter is currently majoring in Education with a 3.73 grade point average (GPA).
Early has commanded the offense this year, compiling 1,113 assists. The junior setter is tied for the team-high with 31 service aces this year, while also ranking fourth on the team in digs (262) and sixth in kills (107). Early established new career-highs this season with 59 assists in two matches, 21 digs against Butler, eight kills against Wichita State, and four service aces in two matches. Early is majoring in Math Education with a 3.78 GPA.
Hlafka ranks fourth on the team with 237 kills, averaging a team second-best 2.42 digs per set. The Bunker Hill, Ill., native also ranks third in total blocks (86) and fourth in hitting percentage (.226). Hlafka set new career-highs with 13 digs against Wichita State and two solo blocks against Missouri State. The right-side hitter is currently majoring in Speech Language Pathology with a 3.70 GPA.
In total, 38 student-athletes were nominated for the MVC Scholar-Athlete team. The conference awarded 16 players with first-team selections, while eight players received honorable mention. To be selected, nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA. The players must also have participated in at least 75 percent of the team's matches for the current season. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore status in both athletic and academic standing at their institution.
The Redbirds will match-up against Missouri State in the first round of the MVC Tournament Thursday, Nov. 28, at 7:30 p.m. (CT).
