Redbirds Face Bluejays in State Farm MVC Tournament

NORMAL, Ill. -The fifth-seeded Illinois State volleyball team (17-13, 9-9 MVC) will face fourth-seeded Creighton (17-13, 9-5 MVC) in the second match of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament quarter finals. The match will take place Thursday, Nov. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the McLeod Center.
The Redbirds fell to Wichita State (3-0) and Missouri State (3-2) last weekend. The Shockers out-played the Redbirds all statistical categories and outhit ISU by 12 kills with a .252 hitting percentage compared to .192. Shannon McGlaughlin was the only Redbird to compile double-digit kills, and she notched 12 kills with just one attack error, hitting .367. Illinois State took an early 2-0 lead, but was unable to close the five-set match against the Bears for the second time this season. The Redbirds improved their hitting percentage from .054 to .230 and compiled 19 more kills in the second match of the series. McGlaughlin led all hitters with 16 kills, and Kristin Stauter recorded a new season-high 18 digs.
Creighton is coming off of a five-set road win against Drake. Natalie Hackbarth led the team with a career-best 14 kills and Megan Bober recorded her ninth triple-double of the season with 11 kills, 36 assists and 14 digs. Five players tallied 10 plus digs, including Julianna Mandolfo, who posted a match-high 32 digs. Mandolfo ranks fifth in the Valley in service aces and recorded three of Creighton's six aces during the match. The Bluejays marked higher numbers in kills, hitting percentage and blocks against the Bulldogs.
This is the 40th meeting between the two teams with Illinois State leading the series 24-15. The last meeting was Oct. 29 with Creighton winning 3-2. The winner of Thursday's match will play defending champion Northern Iowa in the semifinal Friday Nov. 25, at 7:30 p.m.
