Redbirds Face Southern Illinois in MVC Tournament

NORMAL, Ill. -The Illinois State (17-11, 11-7 MVC) volleyball team is on the road to face Southern Illinois (21-8, 11-7 MVC) in the first round of the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in Springfield, Mo., at the Hammons Student Center. The Redbirds will match-up against the Salukis Thursday, Nov. 22, at 5 p.m.
Illinois State enters the tournament as the fifth place seed after recording its first MVC series sweep, defeating Southern Illinois in five-sets and Evansville in four-sets last weekend. The Redbirds have split every two-match series against a Valley opponent during the 2012 season. ISU posted better kill, dig and attack percentage statistics against both opponents.

ISU was led by Ashley Rosch after she recorded 25 kills, 20 digs, three assists and two service aces for ISU against two opponents. She recorded a team-high 18 kills against Southern Illinois (Nov. 16) and tallied 12 digs for her 13th double-double performance of the season. Rosch's performance led Rosch to be named the MVC Freshman of the Week for the third time this season.
Jenny Menendez was solid for the Redbirds in the backcourt and recorded a career-high 40 digs and out-dug all players by more than eight digs in Illinois State's win over SIU. Menendez stayed solid against Evansville and compiled 29 digs, for the 11th time she's earned 20-plus digs this season. Kaitlyn Early also marked a new career-high with 59 assist, erasing her previous record of 55 assists against Missouri State (Nov. 2)
Southern Illinois finished 1-1 in the final weekend of regular-season play and was awarded fourth place seed in the tournament. After being defeated by the Redbirds, the Salukis defeated Indiana State in straight-sets the following night. Bailey Yeager (SIU) - Yeager defended the back row for SIU compiling 32 digs against ISU and 17 digs against Indiana State. Yeager ranks third all-time in total career digs with 1,404 at SIU. Jessica Whitehead led the way offensively for the Salukis totaling 33 kills and averaging 4.12 kills per set. She also added seven digs, three solo blocks, and four block assists.
The winner of Thursday's match will face first-place seeded, Creighton on Friday, Nov. 23, at 5 p.m.
