Hlafka Recognized for Scholar-Athlete Honors
Nov. 20, 2012
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior Brooklyn Hlafka was honored by the Missouri Valley Conference as a Scholar-Athlete honorable mention selection, as announced by the league office Tuesday. Hlafka was the only Redbird recognized as a scholar-athlete.
The Bunker Hill, Ill., native ranks second on the team in kills (246) and kills per set (2.51) and third in blocks (73). She broke four career-records (kills, points, digs, assists) against Creighton (Nov. 10), including a new career-high 19 kills and 20 points. She has led ISU in kills in four matches this season and posted double-digit kills in eight matches. As a speech-language pathology major, Hlafka holds a 3.63 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) and is a member of the AFNI honor roll.
Forty-five student-athletes were nominated for the Valley Scholar-Athlete Team. 12 student-athletes earned first-team recognition and 12 student-athletes were named honorable mentions. The criterion for the honor parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA (on a 4.00 scale). Also, students must have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular-season matches. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore status in both athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
The Redbirds will match-up against Southern Illinois in the first round of the 2012 MVC Conference Tournament, Nov. 22 at 5 p.m., in Springfield, Mo.
