Redbirds Close MVC-Regular Season Play at Home

NORMAL, Ill. -The Illinois State (15-11, 9-7 MVC) volleyball team is back home to host Southern Illinois (20-7, 10-6 MVC) and Evansville (9-20, 4-12 MVC) for its final two matches of regular season play. ISU will take on Southern Illinois Friday and Evansville Saturday. Both matches are set for 7:05 p.m. The Redbirds split last week, sweeping Drake, but falling to No. 23 Creighton the following night. The team was led by Brooklyn Hlafka, who led the Redbirds in kills in back-to-back matches, compiling 30 kills against two opponents. She recorded a team-high 11 kills and added a dig and three blocks against Drake and posted a match-and career-high 19 kills in ISU's four-set loss to Creighton. The Redbirds have secured a spot in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, Nov. 22-24, in Springfield, Mo., but the rankings are still to be determined.

Evansville also finished 1-1 last weekend, beating Bradley and losing to UNI. The team continues to be led by freshman Ashley Ring, who leads the team with 355 kills and also tanks top-five in the MVC in service aces. Jenn Murphy stayed solid for the Purple Aces last weekend and recorded 28 assists in back-to-back matches and posted six kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Evansville ranks seventh in the Valley and will not advance to the conference tournament. Illinois State will host will be hosting "Block Out Hunger," Friday against SIU and fans are invited to bring a canned food item, benefitting Clare House in Bloomington and fans will receive a ticket to the women's basketball game against Michigan, Dec. 5. Redbird Athletics and the volleyball program will also be honoring Julie Mueller Paska and unveiling a banner to commemorate her achievements as a Redbird. Saturday night, ISU will host Senior Night for lone senior Jenny Menendez. Following the match, Menendez will be recognized on the court for her contributions and accomplishments throughout her time as a Redbird volleyball player. After the on court recognition, there will be a Senior Night social in the Legends Room (RBA). Redbird volleyball games can be heard live on GoRedbirds.com or WJBC.com.
