Seyller Named Missouri Valley Co-Newcomer of the Week
Oct. 31, 2006
NORMAL, Ill. - After recording two impressive performances in the front row last week, Illinois State freshman middle blocker Katie Seyller garnered Co-Newcomer of the Week honors by the Missouri Valley Conference, the league office announced Tuesday. It is Seyller's first career weekly accolade and the first for a Redbird player this season.
The Bloomington, Ill. native averaged 9.5 kills and 6.0 blocks (1.7 bpg) per match in two road matches at Drake and Creighton last weekend. In the convincing three-game sweep over the Bulldogs (Oct. 27), Seyller had eight kills on a .375 hitting percentage. In the four-game setback to Creighton on Saturday, she recorded a near double-double with 11 kills and nine block assists (2.25 bgp) while hitting a team second-best .250.
"Katie has had a great freshman year," said head coach Sharon Dingman. "Once we decided as a staff that she would be a starter, she really started to feel comfortable in the role, and we were able to focus on what our expectations would be for her, which have been very high. Katie definitely had a great performance last weekend. For her to have nine blocks against Creighton is a great accomplishment because their middles and right side are so talented. It was fun to watch her come up big. She had some of our biggest kills in the match."
Seyller was inserted into the starting lineup on Sept. 23 against Missouri State, and has started every match since. She has averaged 1.98 kills and 1.34 blocks-per-game in those 13 matches.
Seyller shares the MVC Newcomer of the Week award with Missouri State freshman middle blocker Shanda Harper.
