Conference Play Resumes, 'Birds Head to Indiana State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Coming off a mid-week non-conference match Tuesday, the Illinois State volleyball team (15-6, 8-1) will return to conference play against the Indiana State Sycamores (9-12, 2-7) Friday in Terre Haute, Ind. The match begins the second half of conference play as the Redbirds will face the Sycamores for the second time this season.
On the year, ISU is led by Ashley Rosch with 237 kills, averaging 3.00 kills per set. Emily Orrick, last week's Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Defensive Player of the Week, leads the team with 370 digs, averaging 4.87 digs per set. Junior setter Kaitlyn Early, two weeks removed from her MVC Player of the Week selection, has amassed 828 assists, ranking fourth in the conference with 10.44 assists per set.
In their previous meeting, the Redbirds defeated the Sycamores in straight sets (25-18, 25-15, 25-19) Sept. 27 in Redbird Arena. Rosch led all players in the match with 14 kills, Stacey Niao added 11 kills and the Redbirds emerged victorious after holding Indiana State to a combined .029 attack-percentage. Morgan Dall, the leader in the MVC in kills (350) and kills per set (4.17) was limited to eight kills while hitting -.098 in the match. Currently, ISU leads the MVC in opponent hitting percentage (.140).
The Sycamores have won two of their last three matches and are led on the season by Loni Mackinson with 675 assists. Molly Murphy has a team-high 376 digs and both Cassandra Willis and Kyla Thomas have added 16 solo blocks. In conference play, Indiana State has defeated Evansville and Drake in straight-set sweeps. The Sycamores are most recently coming off an exciting five-set victory Tuesday over Saint Louis.
