Redbirds Host Pair of Tough Conference Matches
Oct. 11, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - Facing one of their biggest challenges of the season, the Illinois State volleyball team (12-4, 5-0) will host conference opponents Wichita State (15-3, 5-0) Friday and Missouri State (10-7, 2-3) Saturday in Redbird Arena. Wichita State is currently the number one team in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) standings, while the Redbirds rank second.
Through five conference matches, the Redbirds have defeated Evansville, Southern Illinois, Indiana State, Loyola and Bradley, sweeping all but one opponent during that stretch. They're led on the season by sophomore Ashley Rosch with 172 kills, averaging 2.87 kills per set. Stacey Niao ranks second with 148 kills and 164 digs, while Emily Orrick leads the team with 242 digs.
Matching the Redbirds success, the Wichita State Shockers have also gone undefeated in conference play, defeating Missouri State, Northern Iowa, Drake, Southern Illinois and Evansville. Two of their mere three losses have come against top 25 opponents, as they lost to 7th-ranked Hawaii and 23rd-ranked Creighton. They're led by Ashley Adrade who has amassed an impressive .438 attack percentage while collecting 187 kills. Chelsey Feekin has commanded the offense with 640 assists, while also compiling 140 digs.
The Missouri State Bears have been one of the most consistent challenges for ISU in recent years, as the past three seasons have produced regular season splits between ISU and MSU. Both matches last season went to five sets with the Redbirds. Through five conferences matches, the Bears have defeated Drake and Evansville in straight-set sweeps, while falling to Wichita State, Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois. They're led by Olivia Brand who has 137 kills on the year, while Kayla Walton has hit .319 on 130 kills.
