Volleyball Opens Conference Play at Home

NORMAL, Ill. - Making its home debut of the 2013 season, the Illinois State volleyball team (7-3) will host Evansville (5-6) and Southern Illinois (4-7) in the first Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) matches of the year. The Redbirds will face Evansville Friday, Sept. 20, at 7:05 p.m., followed by Southern Illinois Sunday, Sept. 22 at 1:05 p.m. (CT).
The Redbirds return home after three-straight weeks on the road, participating in the IUPUI, Nevada and Butler tournaments. In their early season success, the Redbirds are highlighted by a tournament championship at the Nevada-Reno Tournament, in which the team compiled a 4-0 record and multiple all-tournament player selections.
Junior captain Stacey Niao was named the tournament MVP of the Nevada-Reno tournament, while Emily Schneider and Brooklyn Hlafka were each selected to two all-tournament teams. Ashley Rosch was also honored with a selection to the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational all-tournament team.
Evansville comes into the weekend with a 5-6 record following the team's most recent match against Belmont, in which the Purple Aces fell, 3-1. The Evansville volleyball team is led by Ashley Ring, who has collected 169 kills this season and averages 3.93 kills per set. The Purple Aces last defeated ISU Oct. 8, 2010.
Southern Illinois carries a 5-7 record following their Tuesday night victory over Murray State, 3-1. The Salukis are led by Jessica Whitehead, who has amassed 178 kills this season and averages 4.05 kills per set. The Salukis last faced the Redbirds in the first round of last year's MVC Tournament, falling to ISU 3-0.
