NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State volleyball team stepped back onto the court and split into two teams Saturday afternoon for the annual Red/White Scrimmage in Redbird Arena. The Red team defeated the White team, 2-1, as Stacey Niao led the way for all players with 10 kills and nine digs. Sierra Burris led the defensive efforts with 14 digs, while Kaitlyn Early tallied 23 assists.

The White team dominated the first set, 25-9, and posted nine additional kills then the Red team. Niao started a big run for the White team with a block, followed by two back-to-back solo blocks from Early for an 11-5 lead. The White team continued to control the set and earned the next five-consecutive points and compiled a .423 team hitting percentage throughout the set.

The Red team found a rhythm in the second set and jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two kills a piece from Shannon McGlaughlin and Ciera Lucich. Kills from Eliza Smith and Ashleigh Fisher helped the Red team increase the gap for a 17-10 advantage. McGlaughlin and Lucich recorded five kills in the set and Burris added eight digs for a 25-15 win.



After splitting the first two sets, the Red and White teams battled a third set. Emily Schneider compiled three kills and LeighAnn Hranka and Brooklyn Hlafka recorded two kills in the set. The Red team had three players post two kills and Burris added seven digs in the third set for a 15-12 victory.

The Redbirds open the 2012 season at the Ball State Tournament in Muncie, Ind. ISU's first game will be August 24, at 3:30 p.m. (CT) against Virginia Commonwealth.
