NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State volleyball players Kelsey Holman and Angela Rego will be turning in their Redbird uniforms due to recurring and substantial injuries, as announced by head coach Melissa Myers. Medical issues have reached a point that the athletes cannot continue playing and have ended their collegiate careers.

"Kelsey and Angela have made significant and meaningful contributions to our program, both on and off of the court these past few years," Myers said. "These two young women have endured and battled through a great deal of pain and struggle with their injuries and surgeries. We are grateful for their efforts and will miss them both tremendously."

Holman, who has battled knee injuries, appeared in 19 matches and 36 sets in her two years of competition at Illinois State. She recorded 11 kills and 28 total blocks and marked a season-high .500 hitting percentage at Indiana State (11/12). Holman helped the Redbirds off to a great start in the 2010 season during her collegiate debut in the season-opener against Sacramento State (8/27), where she came off the bench and recorded a kill, a career-high three aces and nine block assists. She recorded a career-high three kills against UT Martin (9/3) and complied one or more kills in six matches during the 2011 season.

Rego has struggled with back issues the past two seasons, after playing in 41 matches and 142 sets over the course of three seasons. She was a Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman team selection in 2009 and has tallied 319 kills, 86 digs and 349 points during her time at Illinois State. Rego earned MVC Freshman of the Week honors after posting 19 kills and only five attack errors in matches against Bradley (10/9) and Northern Iowa (10/10) during the 2010 season. The Metamora, Ill., native marked a season-high .429 hitting percentage against Stephen F. Austin (9/2) and recorded five or more kills in 10 matches in 2011. Rego maintains a perfect cumulative 4.0 grade point average (GPA) as a speech pathology major.

The Redbirds will take the court for the first time this season in the annual Red/White scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 18 at 12:30 p.m. in Redbird Arena.
