Redbirds Earn AVCA Team Academic Award

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State volleyball team has earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, as announced by the AVCA Wednesday. This is the fifth-consecutive year that the Redbirds have garnered the distinguishment.
The award, which was initiated in 1993, honors both collegiate and high school volleyball teams that have displayed academic excellence during the school year by maintaining a 3.30 team grade point average (GPA). The Redbirds recently set a program record, posting an impressive 3.66 team GPA during the 2013 spring semester.
Illinois State had three players in the spring semester and two players in the fall semester earn a perfect 4.0 GPA. There are also seven players who have maintained a cumulative 3.5 GPA during their college tenure. Senior Brooklyn Hlafka and junior Eliza Smith each earned a 4.0 GPA during the spring semester.
The AVCA recognized a record-breaking 622 teams this year, compared to 536 teams last year. The first year the award was implemented, only 62 teams were honored in total.
The Redbirds will begin the 2013 season on Aug. 30, in Indianapolis, Ind., at the IUPUI Tournament.
