Redbirds Earn AVCA Academic Award For Second Season
Aug. 2, 2010
NORMAL, Ill. - For the second-consecutive season, the Illinois State volleyball team received an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. The Redbirds achieved a 3.37 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) as a team in 2009-10.
"One of the goals of our program is for our student-athletes to excel academically," said head coach Melissa Myers." Being part of the select group of schools that has achieved the award this year shows the commitment that we have at Illinois State. Over the course of the year, members of the team earned nine 4.0 semester grade-point averages, which has set a high standard. We will continue to strive for this award and a higher cumulative team GPA each year."
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale. A record 450 teams across 10 different classifications earned the honor this past year, including 94 Division I women's programs.
