McGlaughlin Granted Medical Exemption
July 25, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State volleyball player Shannon McGlaughlin has turned in her Redbird uniform due to ongoing complications with an injury. The medical issue has reached the point that McGlaughlin is not able to continue to play and will forego her senior season.
McGlaughlin missed substantial playing time in 2012 while battling a pelvic injury. In her Redbird career, she appeared in 74 matches and 277 sets in her three years of competition at Illinois State. She led the team in kills (419), kills per set (3.41), points (459) and points per set (3.59) during the 2011 season, while also finishing fourth on the team in attack percentage (.221) and service aces (12).
McGlaughlin was a MVC Second-Team selection, MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team selection, and a Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District Second-Team selection during her sophomore year, while also being selected to the Wolverine Invitation All-Tournament Team and earning the Skyhawk Invitational Most Valuable Player Award.
During her freshman season in 2010, she started in all 33 matches and finished second on the team in kills (362), kill per set (2.99) and points (392). She was awarded the MVC Freshman of the Week honor twice and was also named to the MVC All-Freshman Team.
"From the moment Shannon stepped on campus as a freshman, she made an impact within our team, not only on the court, but in the classroom and in the community," Myers said of McGlaughlin. "She is known for a heavy arm and great offense, and in her career she had great performances in important matches for our program. We are grateful for her significant contributions and are certainly going to miss her experience this season."
McGlaughlin maintains a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average while majoring in English education.
The Redbirds will officially begin their season Aug. 30 in Indianapolis, Ind., at the IUPUI tournament at 6:00p.m. CST against host IUPUI.
