LEXINGTON, Ky.- For the forth-consecutive season, the Illinois State volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, as announced by the AVCA. A total of 533 teams earned the AVCA award for the 2011-12 season, breaking the previous year's total of 481 and setting a new all-time high for the award.

Illinois State had five players in the fall semester and five players in the spring semester earn a 4.0 GPA. There were also a total of eight players who achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher during the 2011-2012 academic year, including juniors Shannon McGlaughlin and Angela Rego, who've maintained a perfect cumulative 4.0 GPA throughout their careers. The team compiled the highest women's GPA during the spring semester, after surpassing its 3.5 GPA mark from the fall 2011.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale.
