Current Endowments 2013 Honorees

June 24, 2013 NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior captain Stacey Niao received the Janyth Aellig Endowed Scholarship Monday, as announced by ISU head coach Melissa Myers. Niao is the 17th recipient of the scholarship named in honor of the avid, loving fan and longtime supporter of ISU Athletics.

Niao appeared in 29 matches last season and was fourth on the team in kills (197), kills per set (2.14), and fifth in points scored (237). She recorded double-digit digs in 11 matches, double-digit kills in six matches and had four double-double performances on the year (digs/kills).

"I am honored and humbled to be selected for the Janyth Aellig Endowment Scholarship," Niao said. "The fan support and atmosphere at Illinois State is amazing, and to know that we have people around us that support and encourage our success and experience makes our time here that much more special. It's something that we as players appreciate and look forward to seeing each season."

The scholarship was established in 1997 and is awarded annually to a commendable volleyball or women's basketball student-athlete. Jan and her husband, Fred, attended almost every Redbird basketball and volleyball contest, home and away. When Jan passed away, the endowment was created by Fred and a group of over 50 friends and family members in honor of Jan's passion for ISU Athletics.

"I know that Janyth was an amazing supporter and fan of ISU Basketball and Volleyball," Niao added. "To be honored in her name makes me understand that we play not only for ourselves, the team and the coaches, but for the people around us; the fans, the supporters, the parents and the people who will back us through each challenge we face. I am truly thankful to be selected and hope to see our arena full of people who will share in our success during this upcoming season."

The Aellig Endowed Scholarship is one of 24 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors. For more information about establishing an endowed scholarship, please call the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund office at (309) 438-3803.
