Hlafka Awarded Linda Herman Endowed Scholarship
June 24, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State senior right side hitter Brooklyn Hlafka received the 2013 Dr. Linda Herman Endowed Scholarship Monday, as announced by ISU head coach Melissa Myers. Hlafka is the eighth recipient of the scholarship named in honor of the former Redbird coach and administrator.
Hlafka started in all 30 matches last season and was second on team in kills (273), kills per set (2.60), and third in points (315). She recorded double-digit kills in 12 matches, three or more block assists in 13 matches and was named the Redbird Classic Tournament MVP.
"I am extremely honored to be this year's recipient of the Linda Herman Endowed Scholarship," Hlafka said. "Dr. Linda Herman laid the foundation for the volleyball program as a coach and administrator, and continues to impact Illinois State University and its athletic programs. I am grateful to be associated with the many talented previous winners and am looking forward to the opportunity to build on the program history and tradition that Dr. Herman helped develop."
The Bunker Hill, Ill., native ranked in the top-20 in the Missouri Valley Conference in kills per set (18th) and blocks per set (20th). Hlafka was a MVC All-Tournament selection and a Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention.
The scholarship, which is awarded annually to a Redbird volleyball student-athlete, was created in honor of former volleyball coach and interim athletics director Dr. Linda Herman in September 2005. Rose Stadel, the widow of Joe Warner, handed over the proceeds from the 2005 Joe Warner Memorial Golf Classic to initiate funds for the endowment. The late Warner spent three decades as a prominent business and community leader in central Illinois before his tragic death in a 2002 plane crash. He was an avid Redbird fan and supporter.
Herman was one of Illinois State's most influential administrators. She was named the 1995 National Associate of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) District V Administrator of the Year, and was also the recipient of the Bloomington/Normal YWCA Women of Distinction Award for outstanding leadership and excellence in education in 1997.
Herman spent seven years as the head Redbird volleyball coach, and served four separate stints as ISU's interim athletics director. She was inducted into the Illinois State Athletics Hall of Fame in September 2005, and in December 2003, was inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (AVCA) inaugural Hall of Fame class.
The Herman Endowed Scholarship is one of 24 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors. For more information about establishing an endowed scholarship, please call the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund office at (309) 438-3803.
