Redbird Volleyball Announces 2013 Schedule
June 19, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State head volleyball coach Melissa Myers released the Redbirds' 2013 schedule Wednesday. The Redbirds will compete in 30 matches during the regular season, which includes appearances in three tournaments as well as 18 Missouri Valley Conference matches.
The Redbirds will begin the season at the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) tournament in Indianapolis, Ind., against host IUPUI, marking the first time in program history that the two schools will face each other (Aug. 30). The following day, Illinois State will take on Florida Gulf Coast (FGCU) and Virginia Commonwealth (VCU), who finished the 2012 season ranked 60th out of 330 schools in the ratings percentage index (RPI), which is a measure of how well the program performed against the strength of their schedule (Aug. 31).
The next week, Illinois State will make the trek out west for the Nevada-Reno tournament in Reno, Nevada. The first two matches in the tournament will again feature first time meetings in program history, as the Redbirds are slated to take on Grand Canyon followed by host Nevada (Sept. 6). Day two of the tournament will feature matches against Weber State and UC Davis (Sept. 7).
The third and final non-conference tournament will return the Redbirds to Indianapolis, Ind., for the Butler Tournament. Host Butler will be the first opponent for Illinois State (Sept. 13), followed by Michigan State, who made it to the Sweet-16 in last year's NCAA tournament, and Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), who ranked 56th last year in RPI (Sept. 14). Michigan State is the most familiar of all the tournament opposition, as Illinois State holds a 9-5 all-time series record against the Spartans.
Illinois State will make its regular-season home debut and begin conference play against Evansville on September 20th, marking an end to a six year streak of beginning conference play on the road. ISU will also host Southern Illinois just two days later (Sept. 22), a team that finished 93rd in RPI, before going on the road to face Marquette for a mid-week non-conference match (Sept. 25). Marquette tied Michigan State as the 33rd ranked team in the RPI in 2012. The Redbirds return home to host Indiana State (Sept. 27) to round out their September matches.
October will begin with two road matches against MVC newcomer Loyola (Oct. 4) and Bradley (Oct. 5) followed by two home games against Wichita State, who made it to the Sweet-16 in the 2012 NCAA Tournament (Oct. 11), and Missouri State (Oct. 12). Conference play will continue on the road against powerhouse Northern Iowa (Oct. 18) and Drake (Oct. 19), before the Redbirds return home for their final non-conference matchup of the season against Valparaiso (Oct. 22). A road match against Indiana State (Oct. 25) will conclude October matches, as ISU heads into the final month of the regular season.
Back-to-back home games against Bradley (Nov. 1) and Loyola (Nov. 2) will begin the month before departing for Missouri State (Nov. 8) and Wichita State (Nov. 9) the following week. Northern Iowa (Nov. 14) and Drake (Nov. 17) will mark the final two home games of the regular season, as the Redbirds will wrap things up on the road against Southern Illinois (Nov. 22) and Evansville (Nov. 23).
The 2013 MVC Volleyball Tournament will be held in Wichita, Kansas from Nov. 28-30.
