NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State volleyball team beat the Southern Illinois Salukis in four-set fashion (25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23), Saturday evening at Redbird Arena. Anchoring the Redbird attack was sophomore standout Shannon McGlaughlin who recorded 20 kills and a .250 hitting percentage. Defensively, senior Jenny Menendez held down the court with 23 digs.

In the first set, Southern Illinois jumped ahead of Illinois State, 4-1, but the Redbirds battled back and took their first lead of the set off of an attacking error by SIU, 6-5. ISU took its largest lead of the match thanks to a service ace by Eliza Smith, giving the `Birds a 19-12 advantage. ISU stayed strong at the net and went on to win the set, 25-18. McGlaughlin led the Redbird hitters with seven kills, while Kristin Stauter had 13 assists. LeighAnn Hranka collected six digs.

Southern Illinois came out aggressive in the second set taking a 9-4 lead, but Illinois State rallied back with two runs, cutting the lead to one, 10-9. The momentum shifted back to SIU's side of the net, as the Salukis jumped ahead of ISU again. The Redbirds got back in the game with strong plays at the net, but it wasn't enough. Southern Illinois won the second set, 25-22.

The Redbirds and Salukis traded points for the first half of the third set until SIU took a four-point lead, 12-8. A service ace by Laura Wakefield tied the set, 14-14, followed by a kill from Tabitha Visk to give ISU its first lead of the set. The Redbirds scored six-straight points to increase their lead, 21-15. A kill by McGlaughlin ended the set, giving Illinois State the win, 25-19. McGlaughlin led at the net with six kills, while Hranka and Visk each added four.

In the fourth set, SIU grabbed a four-point lead, 13-9, until Wakefield served four-straight points to tie the game, 14-14. Back-to-back attacking errors by the Salukis gave ISU a two-point lead, 18-16, forcing SIU to take a timeout. Both teams weren't going down without a fight, as the fourth set was tied, 23-23. Hranka put down a kill to give the Redbirds a 24-23 lead and the serve. Following the Saluki timeout, Wakefield served one final ace to solidify the Redbird Victory.
