Redbirds Overpower Purple Aces in Four Sets

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State volleyball team defeated the Purple Aces of Evansville in four sets (25-17, 17-25, 25-19, 25-14), Friday night at Redbird Arena in Normal, Ill. The Redbirds were led by sophomore tandem LeighAnn Hranka and Shannon McGlaughlin who recorded 15 and 14 kills, respectively.

In the first set, Illinois State and Evansville traded points for a majority of the set, including seven lead changes and 10 tied scores. The Redbirds were able to grab the momentum thanks to three-straight kills, giving ISU a five-point advantage, 20-15. Three-straight attacking errors by the Purple Aces helped the Redbirds' lead grow by seven, 23-16. Evansville was not able to fight back, as Illinois State won the set, 25-17. Hlafka led the Redbird offense with five kills, while Kristin Stauter grabbed seven digs and nine assists.

Like the first set, the Redbirds and the Purple Aces exchanged points to start the second set until Evansville scored four-straight points to go ahead of the Redbirds, 16-11. Kills by Emily Schneider and Hranka cut the Purples Aces' lead to four, 18-14. Despite a pair of blocks by Kaitlyn Early and Tabitha Visk late in the match, ISU fell in the second set 25-17. Hranka and McGlaughlin each tallied four kills in the set.

Hranka served back-to-back aces to give the `Birds a 6-5 lead early in the third set, but the Purple Aces fought back and tied the game at 10-10. At the net, Hranka recorded four kills late in the set to give ISU a 19-14 lead. Back-to-back kills by McGlaughlin and Schneider forced Evansville to call a timeout, but the Purple Aces were not able to regain momentum and fell, 25-19. Hranka put down six kills, while Stauter had 13 assists.

ISU jumped ahead 10-4 in the fourth set off of a kill by Ciera Lucich. Laura Wakefield served five-straight points for the Redbirds, giving ISU a 19-9 lead. Visk led the set offensively, recording four kills and recording an .800 attack percentage. Stauter posted 12 assists in the 25-14 set win for ISU.
