WICHITA, Kan. -The Illinois State (9-7, 3-3 MVC) volleyball team was defeated by Wichita State (12-5, 5-2 MVC) on the road 25-20, 24-26, 21-25, 25-16 in its first Missouri Valley Conference match of the weekend. The Redbirds were led by Brooklyn Hlafka with 13 kills and only one attack error for a match high .414 hitting percentage.

Ashley Rosch added 13 kills and 11 digs for her sixth double-double (kills/digs) performance of the season and Stacey Niao notched 10 kills. Jenny Menendez tied a match-high 21 digs and Kaitlyn Early recorded a double-double with 42 assists and 11 digs. Illinois State earned six more blocks than the Shockers and recorded three less attack errors. Wichita State’s Emily Adney recorded a match-high 22 kills.

Despite handing the Shockers four of their first five points of the set from service errors, Illinois State tallied a six-point run with kills from Hlafka and Niao and three blocks for a 13-8 lead. The Redbirds were able to contain the lead until Emily Adney started firing for WSU and posted four kills to tie the set 16-16. ISU earned a four-point string late in the set after the Shockers committed three-consecutive ball handling errors, 20-17. The Redbirds held onto the lead and ended the set with an ace from Sierra Burris and a solo block from Stacey Niao for a 25-20 win.

Wichita State started the set with a 3-1 lead and continued to press its lead with three kills and two service aces from Adney in the first nine points (9-3). A kill from Rosch and three WSU errors helped the ‘Birds get back within two points, 9-7. Illinois State carried the momentum and earned seven-straight points, including four Redbird blocks and three-consecutive blocks from LeighAnn Hranka. The Shockers answered right back and posted a late six-point run, to regain the lead, 22-20. Two back-to-back blocks from Early and Hranka put the Redbirds ahead 24-23, but WSU prevailed, 26-24.

ISU marked the first point on the board with a kill from Niao, but Wichita State quickly took the lead with kills from Adney and Elizabeth Field and two Redbird attack errors, 6-4. Illinois State was able to stay within one point throughout the set, but struggled to gain a lead. Early, Niao, and Rosch recorded kills at the end of the set, but the Shockers captured the third set, 25-21.

WSU jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fourth set with three kills from Adney and two ISU errors. Illinois State worked its way back into the game and tied the set at 9-9 with a kill from Niao and a block from Hranka and Hlafka. Illinois State committed four-straight errors after the tie, allowing Wichita State to score six points for a 17-11 lead. The Shockers maintained momentum and ended the set in a 25-16 victory.
