TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -The Illinois State volleyball team (9-6, 3-2 MVC) defeated Indiana State (3-12, 1-4 MVC) on the road Friday night. The Redbirds were led by Ashley Rosch with 14 kills and 16 digs for her fifth double-double (kills/digs) performance of the season.

Kaitlyn Early notched 42 assists and three blocks and LeighAnn Hranka added five blocks and 12 points. The Redbirds recorded a .227 team hitting percentage compared to Indiana State’s .104 and tallied 10 more blocks than the Sycamores.

Both teams exchanged points at the start of the match until Illinois State broke away at 8-8. The Redbirds put together a four-point run with two kills from middle hitters Emily Schneider and Hranka (11-8). ISU only gave up one point before tallying an additional string of six-points with the help of three Sycamore errors for a 19-10 lead. The Redbirds maintained control through the rest of the set and grabbed a 25-16 victory with a kill from Stacey Niao.

Indiana State started the second set with a 2-0 lead and maintained a two-point lead until the Redbirds tied the set 9-9 with a kill by Brooklyn Hlafka. The Sycamores regained a rhythm and compiled a five-point run, aided by three Redbird errors (14-9). Illinois State continued to battle and tallied three consecutive points with two kills from Schneider and an ace from Niao (18-15). ISU gave up the next two points, but impressive defense by Sierra Burris helped the Redbirds slowdown the Indiana State offense. Illinois State took control and posted five-straight points to tie the match 20-20. Rosch added four kills in six points and the Redbirds closed the set with an ace by Hranka, 26-24.

The Redbirds came out firing in the third set and earned a 5-1 lead, forcing Indiana State to call an early timeout. Illinois State sustained its lead until the Sycamores tied the set at 9-9 off of an ace by Loni Mackinson. ISU quickly regained the lead with two-consecutive kills from Hranka and Rosch and two Indiana State errors. The Redbirds continued to extend their lead and amassed a six-point run with two blocks from Early and Hranka and two kills from Rosch. Illinois State captured the third set 25-20 for a three-set victory.
