Redbird Volleyball Claims a 3-0 Victory Over Indiana State

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State (10-4, 3-0) volleyball team claimed a 3-0 victory over Indiana State (7-7, 1-2) in straight sets Friday night at Redbird Arena. All of Illinois State's conference victories have been in straight sets. Ashley Rosch led the Redbirds with 14 kills, earning 15 points.

Stacey Niao had 11 kills, while LeighAnn Hranka added nine. Emily Schneider had six kills and four service aces in the victory, as Kaitlyn Early dished out 37 assists. Emily Orrick led the Redbirds with 11 digs, while Niao added nine and Early collected eight.

The two teams traded points to start the match, until the Redbirds jumped ahead to a four-point lead, 9-5, forcing a Sycamore timeout. Back-to-back kills by Rosch, gave Illinois State a six-point advantage, 16-10, and the Redbirds kept the momentum, as Eliza Smith and Hranka recorded kills to give the `Birds an 18-12 lead. Indiana State responded with a 3-0 run to get within four, 19-15. Despite momentum late in the set by the Sycamores, the Redbirds scored two-straight points to win the set, 25-18. Niao and Rosch lead the Redbirds with four kills apiece, while Early had 11 assists.

Illinois State forced an Indiana State timeout, after a 4-0 run to take a 9-4 lead. After the break, the Sycamores took the momentum and went on a 4-0 run of their own to get within three points, 10-7. Back-to-back service aces by Schneider gave Illinois State a 20-14 advantage and forced an Indiana State timeout. Schneider would get another service ace, as the Redbirds went on an 8-1 run, finishing the second set 25-15 over the Sycamores. Illinois State headed into the locker room with a 2-0 lead at the break. In the second set, Rosch and Hranka each recorded four kills, while Schneider added three.

The two teams battled early in the third set and were tied, 13-13, before an attacking error by Illinois State gave Indiana State a two-point advantage, 18-16, but the Redbirds gained a 3-0 run to take a 19-18 lead, forcing a Sycamore timeout. The Redbirds gained two more points, pushing the score to 21-18, forcing another Indiana State timeout. After the break the `Birds maintained the momentum with a 5-0 run to close the third set, 25-19, and win the match 3-0 over the Sycamores.

The match's attendance of 1,720 on "PACK the Arena" night, marked the 11th largest attendance at Redbird Arena for Illinois State volleyball in program history. The Redbirds will travel to Loyola Friday at 7 p.m., for their first conference road match of the season.
