Redbirds Defeat In-State Rival Bradley

NORMAL, Ill.- The Illinois State volleyball team (8-6, 2-2 MVC) defeated in-state rival Bradley 6-8, 0-3 MVC) Saturday night for its second Missouri Valley Conference victory. The Redbirds were led by Ashley Rosch with 22 kills and 13 digs. Kaitlyn Early notched 50 assists and 12 digs, while Jenny Menendez added 18 digs of her own.

The Redbirds were off to an early two-point lead in the first set with back-to-back kills from LeighAnn Hranka and Emily Schneider (5-3). Illinois State tallied an additional four-point string and extended its lead to 11-6 with the help of three Bradley attack errors.The Braves were able to get within two points (11-9), but the `Birds tallied a late five-point run to close the set 25-16.

Bradley jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set, until Hranka notched a kill to put the Redbirds on the board (4-1). Shannon McGlaughlin, Rosch, and Schneider followed Hranka's lead and recorded three more kills to bring ISU within three (7-4). The Braves started to find a rhythm and spread the gap to seven points, forcing Illinois State to call its second timeout (17-9).ISU continued to battle late in the set and recorded five-straight points with a kill from Schneider, a service ace from McGlaughlin and three Redbird blocks (19-16). Despite a strong comeback, Bradley captured the second set 25-21.

After the intermission, both teams traded points, until the Redbirds took flight and posted seven-consecutive points with a kill and a block from Early and two back-to-back kills from Rosch (14-7).BU was able to get within five points (20-14) with the help of four ISU errors, but McGlaughlin notched another kill to get the Redbirds back on track. ISU controlled the momentum throughout the rest of the set and finished with a strong block from Schneider and McGlaughlin for a 25-14 victory.

Schneider got the `Birds off to a good start and recorded two quick kills for a 6-4 ISU lead. Early stayed aggressive and earned her second kill of the set, followed by two kills by Rosch, to put Illinois State ahead 10-7. The Redbirds continued to press and extended its lead to 16-8 with kills from Hranka and Rosch and two Bradley errors. ISU closed the set with a kill by Rosch, 25-17.
