ISU Sweeps Northeastern In First Match of Rams Volleyball Classic
Sept. 10, 2010
FT. COLLINS, Colo. - Illinois State (7-2) recorded its second-consecutive sweep, beating Northeastern (25-23, 25-19, 25-17) in the opening match of the Rams Volleyball Classic Presented by PVHS in Ft. Collins, Colo. The Redbirds never trailed by more than three points the entire match.
"This was one of the most well executed matches we have had all season," said head coach Melissa Myers. "We really executed our serve well. In the third set, Northeastern had 12 unforced errors, which I think is a product of serving to the right spots and executing the gameplan. I like to see our opponent's score decrease each set. That shows we were able to make adjustments after each set and neutralize our opponents attack."
Junior Tabitha Visk led ISU with eight kills. Senior Mallory Leggett had five and seniors Katie Culbertson and Hailey Kelley and junior Kristin Stauter each had four. Northeastern had more kills that the Redbirds, 37-28, but committed nearly twice the errors, 27-14.
Illinois State was aided by six service aces, led by Visk's two. Stauter led the Redbirds with 22 set-assists and 12 digs.
In the first set, Illinois State battled from behind to tie the score five times, only to have Northeastern maintain the lead. Finally, after the sixth tie of the set, a Leggett ace gave ISU its first lead, 20-19. A pair of Northeastern errors gave the set to ISU, 25-23.
Illinois State grabbed an 8-7 lead in the second set and held onto it the rest of the way. Leading by one, the Redbirds reeled off five-straight points to pull ahead, 19-13. A pair of kills, a Visk ace and a Husky error stretched the lead to seven points. Stauter and Kelley combined on a block to close out the set, 25-19.
The third set featured 12 ties through the first 32 points of play. With the score tied at 16, the Redbirds put together a 9-1 run to win the set, 25-17. ISU had three kills, two blocks and an ace in the decisive run. Northeastern was hampered by 12 attack errors in the set.
Illinois State has two matches at the Rams Volleyball Classic Saturday. The Redbirds take on Texas Tech at 11 a.m. and No. 15 Colorado State at 8 p.m.
