Redbirds Struggle to Slow Valpo Offense

VALPARAISO, Ind. -Pin hitters Kelsey Victor and Sarah Dooms took charge for the Crusaders (4-3), compiling 23 kills in a four-set (25-13, 11-25, 22-25, 20-25) victory over Illinois State (3-4) Tuesday night.

Dooms posted 12 kills and 16 digs and Victor added 11 kills. Valparaiso had four players tally double-digit digs, including Taylor Root with a match-high 25 digs. The Crusaders compiled a .220 team hitting percentage and 10 total blocks. Kelsey Berrington controlled the offense with 24 assists.

Shannon McGlaughlin had 13 kills and 15 digs to lead the way for Illinois State, Ashley Rosch tallied 10 kills and 14 digs, and Brooklyn Hlafka and Emily Schneider added eight kills. Libero Jenny Menendez led the team with 20 digs and Kaitlyn Earlyposted 42 assists and nine digs.

Illinois State struggled from the offensive end and was out-hit by nine kills for a .149 team hitting percentage.

The Redbirds will be back in action this weekend to compete against Florida Gulf Coast, Toledo and Memphis at the Toledo Tournament Sept. 7-8 in Toledo, Ohio.
