MUNCIE, Ind. - The Illinois State volleyball team (1-1) captured its first win of the 2012 season after defeating Gardner-Webb (0-2) in three sets (25-19, 25-23, 25-15). Shannon McGlaughlin led the team with 10 kills and posted her first double-double of the season with the addition of 14 digs.

Two back-to-back kills by Brooklyn Hlafka gave the Redbirds momentum that carried throughout the first set. Illinois State made an early five-point run with kills from McGlaughlin and Kaitlyn Early for an 11-7 lead. The Redbirds were able to compile four additional strings of three or more points to close the set 25-19. The Redbird defense held the Bulldog offense to a 0.105 team hitting percentage throughout the set.

After starting out the second set down 3-0, Illinois State was able to get within two points with kills from McGlaughlin and Early. The Redbirds regained the lead with two-consecutive kills from Hlafka and a Bulldog attack error (10-8). Gardner-Webb fought back with kills from Erin Anderson and three ISU errors for a 19-15 lead. Ashley Rosch made her mark late in the set, posting three kills in four points and helping seal the 25-23 second set victory.

The Redbirds took charge out of the break and jumped out to an early 7-1 lead with kills from Eliza Smith, Stacey Niao, Early and LeighAnn Hranka, in addition to three Gardner-Webb ball handling errors. Illinois State continued to control the momentum and captured the set 25-15.
