Redbirds Ready to Compete at Missouri Valley Individual Championships
Oct. 4, 2012
Normal, Ill.-The Illinois State women's tennis team is set to compete at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships, October 5-7, in Wichita, Kan.
At the MVC Individuals last season, the Redbirds fought hard but fell short of their goals. Head Coach Chris Hoover is ready to improve that mark. "Last year we didn't play as well as we could have, and we came away empty handed," Hoover said. "This year we are looking to improve upon that."
In the past, the team has found success at the MVC Individuals. At the competition in 2010, the team won two titles when Gabby Phillips and Heather Nisbet both won their singles championship matches as freshman. With both Phillips and Nisbet set to compete as juniors, they will get the chance to put their experience to the test.
The team's most recent competition was at the DePaul Invitational where the Redbirds found a fair amount of success, finishing with an overall record of 16-11 in singles play and 7-6 in doubles. Many of the players were able to rally back from early losses, including Phillips, who was able to secure first place victory in consolation singles.
The Redbirds best performance this season was at the Redbird Roundup in Normal, Ill., where Stefanie Youngberg and Emmie Marx won a pair of singles titles.
The MVC Individual championships are hosted by Wichita State. Play begins at Friday morning at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
