NORMAL, Ill.-The Illinois State women's tennis team begins the 2012-13 season by competing in the Ball State Invitational in Muncie, Ind., Sept. 14-15. The team will compete against Ball State, Chicago State, Cleveland State, Dayton, IPFW, UIPUI, Louisville, Miami-Ohio, Valparaiso and Wright State.

Play is set to begin at 9 a.m., on Friday and will end on Saturday. Competition Friday will begin with two doubles matches, followed by two singles matches.

With many of the athletes returning this season, head coach Chris Hoover is eager to start the season on the right foot.

"There's going to be a lot of completion this weekend," Hoover said. "But, the team is ready to start the year strong and show everyone exactly what we are capable of."

The Redbirds start the season, after coming off their third-straight runner up finish at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships. Illinois State returns most of the players from its 2011-12 roster, including sophomore Emmie Marx, juniors Carolina Abello, Ashton Nisbet, Heather Nisbet, Gabby Phillips, and Phyllis Tigges, and seniors Ariane Maack, and Stefanie Youngberg. In addition, the team adds freshmen Kadi Ilves and Sarah Paulson.

The two seniors, Maack and Youngberg, will be stepping into a leadership role this season and hope to improve upon last year's performances. During the 2011-12 season Maack, who only participated in the spring, posted a mark of 1-7 in overall singles play. Maack was a Missouri Valley Conference singles champion in 2009. Youngberg will also look to improve upon last season's performance, after posting an overall record of 11-14 in singles play.

Phillips will be looking to build upon her success as a sophomore. Phillips posted an overall singles record of 9-6, while also posting an overall doubles mark of 7-2 with Youngberg as her partner.

Marx, who transferred to the squad after the beginning of last season, posted an overall singles record of 14-9 at the No. 2 position, winning four of those matches at the No. 1 position in conference play. Marx was also named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-select team.
