Aug 28, 2013

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's tennis team has announced its 2013-14 regular season schedule. The fall season includes five individual tournaments around the country. The Redbirds will host six home matches during the spring, four of which are against Missouri Valley Conference opponents, ahead of the MVC Championships in April.

The squad of nine is coached by Chris Hooverwho returns for his 27th year as a head coach and his 20th year at Illinois State. Throughout his coaching career in the Valley he has named MVC Coach of the Year five times. Hoover has led the Redbirds to five of the last 10 MVC Championships and hopes to compete for another title this season.

"I think we've got a seasoned bunch coming back," Hoover said. "We only lost one starter and I think our recruits look good. We're going to try to make another run at the Valley title. We're excited to get the season and practice started to see how everyone looks. Our goal every year is to compete for a championship, but it seems to have a little more relevance this year because I have five seniors."

The team is led by its five seniors: Carolina Abello, Heather Nisbet, Gabby Phillips, Ashton Nisbet and Phyllis Tigges. This season two freshmen, Madeliene Baillon and Sierra Stone, join the squad. Kadi Ilves, a sophomore, and Emmie Marx, a junior, return as well.

Graduate assistant Cami Hubbsis also back for her second year as assistant coach to Hoover.

The Redbirds start their season Sept. 20 at the Ball State Fall Invitational in Muncie, Ind. The spring season will begin Jan. 24 at home versus Eastern Illinois. The full schedule can be found here.
