NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's tennis team released its 2008-09 schedule Thursday and will begin the fall season with four individual tournaments. In the spring, the Redbirds will host four schools in non-conference match-ups before closing the season with eight-straight Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) matches.

The Redbirds return three players from the 2007-08 squad that finished 13-10 overall, and add four newcomers. Illinois State head coach Chris Hoover, who enters his 14th season with the Redbirds, admits the schedule will be challenging for a team full of newcomers, but he is excited about the possibilities.

"We are usually in the top-three of the Missouri Valley Conference," said Hoover. "But I want us to bring the trophy back home, and be No. 1 again. I really think we have the pieces we need to put the puzzle back together."

Illinois State opens the fall individual season at the Mizzou Tiger Invitational (Sept. 12-14) and concludes the fall at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regionals (Oct. 23-27).

The Redbirds open the spring season at home against IUPUI (Jan. 23), and welcome non-conference foes Butler (Feb. 20), Eastern Illinois (Feb. 27) and Illinois-Chicago (Mar. 21).

In March, the Redbirds will travel to New Orleans for spring break and face Tulane (Mar. 8), Louisiana-Lafayette (Mar. 9) and New Orleans (Mar. 10), all at New Orleans.

The season concludes with eight-straight conference matches, including home matches with Bradley (Mar. 27), Northern Iowa (Apr. 11) and Drake (Apr. 12), before the State Farm MVC Championships in Omaha, Neb. After reaching the semifinals in 2008, the Redbirds hope to contend for the championship crown again in 2009, and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
