NORMAL, Ill. - The Missouri Valley Conference announced its academic awards for the 2007-08 year and Illinois State received more than its fair share of accolades. ISU had 157 student-athletes named to the MVC Honor Roll, including three who received the President's Council Academic Award and 59 who received the Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award.

Women's swimming senior Tracy Deyell, men's tennis senior Luka Marinkovic and women's tennis senior Veronique Parke-Bedard all earned the President's Council Academic Award. The highest academic award presented by the conference was received by 38 Valley student-athletes in 2007-08. The distinction requires a minimum 3.8 cumulative-grade point average (GPA) through the Fall 2007 semester, participation in athletics for a minimum of two years and the student-athlete must be within 18 credit hours of graduation.

Deyell was a first-team All-Valley and All-MVC Scholar-Athlete selection this past year and set two school and one Valley record at the State Farm MVC Championships. Marinkovic was an MVC All-Select Team and MVC Scholar-Athlete selection this past spring. Parke-Bedard was also an MVC Scholar-Athlete Team member in women's tennis.

In addition to the three President's Council Award winners, ISU had 59 student-athletes receive the MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award. That distinction requires a minimum GPA of 3.5 over the last two semesters, including at least a 3.2 for the Fall 2007 term, and participation in athletics. Freshmen are not eligible for the Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award. Of the 59 Redbirds who received the award, 15 were from the track and field team, seven from women's basketball, seven from women's soccer, six from softball, six from swimming and diving, five from volleyball, five from women's golf, three from women's tennis, two from baseball, two from men's basketball and one from men's tennis.

All of those student-athletes were named to the MVC Honor Roll, along with 95 other ISU student-athletes. To qualify for the Valley Honor Roll, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.2 GPA for a specified term (Fall 2007), must have been a member of an athletics team and must have a minimum of 12 credit hours of enrollment in the fall.
