Abello and Marx Named to MVC All-Select Team; Scholar-Athletes Honored

WICHITA, Kan. - Junior Carolina Abello and sophomore Emmie Marx both earned spots on the Missouri Valley Conference All-Select Team, as announced Thursday night, preceding the Valley Team Tennis Championship hosted by Wichita State. Abello, along with teammates Heather Nisbet and Phyllis Tigges, also collected Valley Scholar-Athlete First Team accolades.

Abello is 21-12 in singles and has only lost one Valley match in the fall and spring for a 10-1 record against conference opponents. The Barranquilla, Colombia, native won the No. 3 title at the Valley Individual Championships in October 2012, plus Abello has victories in five of her last six singles matches, with an overall record of 6-1 in singles play at home. Along with her success on the court, Abello, who was also a 2012 Valley Scholar-Athlete, holds a 3.80 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) in business administration.

Meanwhile, Marx has a current singles record of 21-16 at the No. 1 position, as just a sophomore. She also boasts a tournament record of 11-6 in the top flight and qualified for and competed in the ITA Regional Tournament last fall, where she reached the quarterfinals. The Mossel Bay, South Africa native, is 17-12 in doubles and has a record of 5-2 at the No. 2 doubles position.

Joining Abello on this year's Valley Scholar-Athlete First Team, Nisbet has a 3.88 GPA in Physical Education. Nisbet is 13-14 in doubles and has won five of her last nine Valley doubles matches at the No. 3 position, with Abello. Fellow Valley Scholar-Athlete, Tigges is an agriculture major with a 3.90 GPA. She won the No. 2 singles title in October of 2012 and has an overall singles record of 14-16. The three scholar-athletes are also members of the AFNI Honor Roll.

 

 

The Illinois State women's tennis team enters the 2013 Valley Team Championships as the No. 4 seed. ISU begins with a quarterfinal match against No. 5 Evansville, Friday at 9 a.m. CST, in Wichita, Kan.
