Redbirds Finish with Back-to-Back Valley Matches at Home

NORMAL, Ill.-The Illinois State Women's tennis team (8-11, 3-2 MVC) is set to take on the UNI Panthers (7-9, 1-4 MVC), followed by the Drake Bulldogs (10-9, 3-2 MVC) on Saturday April 20, and Sunday April 21 at Gregory Street Tennis Courts in Normal, Ill.

Lone Redbird senior Stefanie Youngberg will play her final match at Illinois State's Gregory Street Tennis Courts against Drake. Youngberg and Carolina Abello are tied for the second most singles victories on the team with 19 wins each. Additionally, Youngberg was a runner-up at the Missouri Valley Individual Championships in the fall and Abello earned a singles championship.

This weekend's competitions against the Panthers and the Bulldogs mark the final two conference matches for the team before heading into the Missouri Valley Conference Team Championships in Wichita, Kan., next weekend. With regular-season conference play wrapping up for all Valley teams this weekend, competition will be fierce.

The Redbirds will first take on the UNI Panthers on Saturday. The Panthers have struggled this season in conference play, dropping several close matches with their only conference victory over Creighton, 4-3. Most recently, the Panthers dropped a match to Evansville, 4-3 and another to Southern Illinois, 5-2.

After competing against UNI Saturday, the Redbirds will quickly prepare themselves to battle the Bulldogs on Sunday. Drake has had success this season in conference play setting a mark of 3-2 heading into the final weekend of conference competition before the MVC Team Championships. The Bulldogs have lost two of their last three competitions, dropping close matches to Southern Illinois and Wichita State, 4-3 before defeating Evansville, 4-3.

The match against UNI is will begin at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday with the match against Drake set to begin at 10 a.m. CT on Sunday at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts in Normal, Ill.
