Redbirds Face Two MVC Opponents at Home
April 12, 2012
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's tennis (8-10, 2-1 MVC) team continues conference play against Missouri Valley Conference opponents, Creighton and No.68 Wichita State, at home on Saturday and Sunday.
Illinois State hopes to use the momentum from their last matches to capture the next two wins to even their overall record and mark them as a top team within the Valley. Coming off of a win on the road against Northern Iowa, 6-1, on April 8, and at home on March 30 against in-state rival Bradley, 7-0, head coach Chris Hoover is looking forward to continue outdoor play.
"Every team in the MVCs is tough this year," said Hoover. "Wichita State is the ranked, so they are the team to beat. We're going to come in fighting because we know it's going to be a fight. The team is going to take it match-by-match, and I know if we keep that competitive mentality, we'll be able to put it together this weekend."
Wichita State holds the only nationally-ranked team within the Valley, and heads into play against the Redbirds with a overall record of 14-5 overall and 3-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference after defeating Southern Illinois, 7-0 on April 8. In their most recent match-up, the Shockers posted the doubles point after two tough matches, following by sweeping every singles match.
Creighton, coming off of a loss to SIU, looks to improve upon a record of 9-7 on the season, 0-3 in MVC play. The Salukis dropped Creighton, 6-1, after the Bulldogs were only able to post the doubles point.
ISU faces Wichita State, Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and Creighton on Sunday, April 15 at 10:00a.m. Play is scheduled to take place on the Gregory Street Tennis Courts, weather permitting.
