Redbirds Defeat IUPUI 5-2 Remaining Undefeated at Home

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.-The Illinois State women's tennis team wrapped up its third straight home match with another victory, defeating the IUPUI Jaguars, 5-2 on Friday, Feb. 8.

The match against the Jaguars marks the third consecutive win for the Redbirds who seem to finding their footing after a season opening loss to Illinois. The team bounced back from the loss and has opened up the spring season with a 3-1 record, remaining unbeaten at home.

"We are always happy to win," said head coach Chris Hoover. "Tonight is something we can definitely build upon and we are still improving."

The Redbirds continue to show dominance in doubles play, having secured the doubles point for the third consecutive match. No. 3 doubles partners Gabby Phillips and Carolina Abello were the first to finish, defeating Jessika Bays and Jaclyn Hyman, 8-1. Second to finish were No. 1 doubles partners Phyllis Tigges and Kadi Ilves who defeated Shelly Hullet and Bobbi Modesto, 8-1 as well. Stefanie Youngberg and Heather Nisbet played well, but lost a close content to Vanessa Whyte and Rachael Bridegroom at a score of, 8-6.



Strong performances in singles as well by Phillips and Ilves helped lift the Redbirds, ultimately securing the team victory. At No. 5 singles, Phillips shut out Jessika Bays, 6-0, 6-0, while at No. 2 singles, Ilves edged out Vanessa Whyte, 6-1, 6-2.

Youngberg remained winless after singles play, dropping a close match to Modesto, 6-4, 6-3. Ashton Nisbet also conceded a loss in singles, falling to Hyman in a tie breaker after two sets, 6-1, 7-6 (5).

"Stefanie (Youngberg) played hard but she didn't come out with her game in singles and just couldn't recover to take the win," said Hoover. "Tonight was Ashton's (Nisbet) first match back. We will build ourselves up and improve from here."

Next, the team will travel to Lincoln Neb. to take on the Nebraska Corn Huskers on Friday, Feb. 15. with play set to begin at 4 p.m. CT. The team will remain in Lincoln, Neb. for another match Saturday, Feb. 16 against Colorado State before traveling to Omaha, Neb. to take on Creighton on Sunday, Feb. 17.
