Redbirds Fall to Illinois 5-1 in Spring Opener

Champaign, Ill.-The Illinois State women's tennis team fell to No. 24 Illinois 5-1 in the opening match of the spring season Friday Jan. 18.

Head coach Chris Hoover was disheartened by the loss but remained optimistic in spite of the outcome.

Hoover said, "Today's competition was uneventful for us, but overall was a good start to the spring season. There is defiantly still room for improvement, so next week we will focus on practicing hard and positioning ourselves for success in our next match."

The competition was played under a new format with four rounds of singles and one round of doubles played simultaneously.

Kadi Ilves recorded the single Redbird win of the match defeating Julia Jamieson 6-2, 6-3 in the third round of singles action.

Hoover said, "I am happy with the way Kadi played today. She did well and was able to come away with a solid victory against a tough opponent."

Emmie Marx fell to Allison Falkin at a score of 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of singles. Marx had been previously defeated by Falkin in the main draw of the ITA Regional tournament in the fall.



Additionally Carolina Abello was defeated by Breanne Smutko 6-4, 6-3 in the second round with Stefanie Youngberg falling to Misia Kedzierski 6-0, 6-4 in the fourth round.

In doubles, Phyllis Tigges and Sarah Paulson were defeated by Rachel White and Melissa Kopinski 6-1, 6-1. White and Kopinski are ranked No. 11 nationally in doubles.
