Champaign, Ill-The Illinois State women's tennis team travels to face off against a powerful Illini squad for the spring opener Friday, Jan. 18. The Illini are ranked No. 24 in the nation as a team.

Despite the challenges involved with competing against such a strong opponent, head coach Chris Hoover is optimistic of the outcome and thankful to have such strong team on the schedule.

Hoover said, "We are just looking forward to getting started. Illinois is a very good team and we are glad to have the opportunity to play them. I am excited to see how we stack up. We always try to figure a way to give ourselves the best shot possible. The team has to come out and play their best and the chips will fall where they fall."

The team enters the spring season riding the momentum of a string of solid performances during the fall season.

Senior Stefanie Youngberg finished the season strong, taking second place at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships and finished the fall season with an overall record of 10-3 in singles.

Sophomore Emmie Marx finished strong as well. Marx was able to qualify for the front draw of the ITA Regional Tournament where she was able to compete against the best of the best in the ITA Midwest region. Marx finished the fall with an overall record of 11-6 in singles play.

The team also returns juniors Carolina Abello and Phyllis Tigges who each won an MVC Individuals title in the fall season. Additionally, Abello finished with a singles record of 10-3, and Tigges finishing with a singles record of 6-4.

Freshman Kadi Ilves, who finished short of an MVC title in the fall, will look to build upon a solid first fall season with the Redbirds.

"Kadi has come back this semester with a real sense of urgency," Hoover said. "She was not pleased with her own performance in the fall and is ready to improve now in the spring."

Play is set to begin at 3 p.m. CT in the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, Ill. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
