Tigges and Abello Win Singles Titles at MVC Individual Championships
Oct. 7, 2012
Wichita, Kan. The Illinois State women's tennis team claimed two singles titles at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships Sunday in Wichita, Kan.
Head Coach Chris Hoover is pleased with the Redbirds' performance in singles.
"The way we started out Friday morning in doubles brought up some concern, but when the time came for singles, the student-athletes were really able to turn it around, "Hoover said. "We ended up advancing six out of seven players to the semi-finals on the first day. All in all, the team fought very hard to turn things around and I think we made a step in the right direction."
First place did not come easily for veteran players Phyllis Tigges and Carolina Abello, with each match being decided in three grueling sets. In flight two, Tigges battled after dropping the first set and eventually defeated Lucia Kovalova of Wichita State (1-6, 6-3, 6-4). In flight three, Abello outlasted her opponent as well, defeating Natasha Tomishima of Southern Illinois (7-6, 3-6, 6-1).
Abello also won third place in doubles play alongside partner Kadi Ilves defeating Anderson and Noonan of Creighton (8-1).
Hoover is proud of the way Tigges and Abello performed at the competition this weekend.
"Phyllis and Carolina played well all weekend and fought hard to win their finals matches," Hoover said. "The matches were long with each going to three sets, but they didn't give up."
The Redbirds' claimed two second place positions as well at the competition with Ilves falling to Rebecca Pedrazzi of Wichita State (6-4, 6-1) and Stefanie Youngberg to Satjaporn Moahajaroenkul of Wichita State (6-0, 6-0) in the finals of their respective flights.
"Kadi and Stefanie were both disappointed," Hoover said. "The loss is especially hard for Stefanie. She is a senior and would have loved to bring home a title."
Additionally, both Emmie Marx and Gabby Phillips failed to capture third place in their flights with Marx falling to Jennie Hartjes of Creighton (6-4, 7-5) and Phillips to Anstacia Simons of Southern Illinois (6-4, 6-2). Still in singles, Heather Nisbet was able to defeat Summer Schlotterback of Wichita State (7-6, 6-3) in the consolation finals.
The next competition is the ITA Regional Tournament and will take place October 25-30 in Champaign Ill.
