Redbirds Bring Home Three MVC Championship Titles

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Emmie Marx, Madeliene Baillon and Gabby Phillips each earned Missouri Valley Conference singles titles in their respective flights as the Illinois State women's tennis team wrapped up the MVC Individual Championships Sunday.
"Each weekend we've played, we have been making improvements, and it really showed this weekend," head coach Chris Hoover said. "I think we should have won another one of our matches today, but we still came home with three titles, so we're happy."
In singles play, Marx defeated Evansville's Marina Moreno, 6-1, 6-3, for the MVC Flight 3 championship. Meanwhile, Baillon beat Wichita State's Summer Schlotterback in Flight 6, 6-2, 6-2, securing her first-career championship title, and Phillips defeated fellow-Redbird Heather Nisbet, 7-6 (6), 6-3, to win the Flight 7 conference title.
Kadi Ilves fell to Drake's Maddie Johnson, 0-6, 6-1, 6-1, in Flight 5. Meanwhile, in singles consolation matches, Phyllis Tigges claimed victory over Bradley's Adele Henke, 6-2, 6-2, and Carolina Abello beat Evansville's Mina Milovic, 6-0, 6-3.
In doubles play, Baillon and Nisbet fell to Wichita State'sVeronika Blaskova and Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul, 8-6. Tigges and Sierra Stone lost to Evansville's Natasha James and Marketa Trousilova, 8-4, and Marx and Ilves fell to Northern Iowa's Kylie Haviland and Krissy Lankelma, 8-5.
This week, the Redbirds prepare for their final tournament of the fall season, the ITA Midwest Regional in Ann Arbor, Mich., Oct. 10-14.
