Women's Tennis Advances Five Into Singles Finals AT MVC Championship

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Illinois State women's tennis team advanced all five remaining players into the singles finals, as well as one doubles pair, at the MVC Individual Championships Saturday.

After only an hour of play Saturday morning outdoors at the Dwight Davis courts, rain caused the competition to move indoors to the Kingspoint Tennis Center in Belleville, Ill.Due to the rain many of the consolation matches have been pushed back to be played on Sunday.

"It was a hard fought day today," head coach Chris Hooversaid. "We're excited about advancing to five finals tomorrow and we are looking forward to it."

The Redbirds went 5-0 at Saturday's singles competition, winning all matches and advancing into the finals on Sunday. Emmie Marx defeated Wichita State's Abby Stevens 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-3. Kadi Ilves advanced over Southern Illinois's Gisela Cairo Baza 6-0, 6-1. Madeliene Baillon claimed victory over SIU's Polina Dozortseva 6-1, 6-1. Gabby Phillips defeated Northern Iowa's Jordyn Kearney 6-2, 7-6 (3). Heather Nisbetadvanced over Drake's Amanda Dick 6-4, 6-1.

In doubles play, Baillon and H. Nisbet defeated SIU's Ariadna Cairo Baza and Gisela Cairo Baza, 8-2. Phyllis Tigges and Sierra Stonefell to SIU's Korey Love and Natasha Tomishima, 8-6, and Marx and Ilves fell to WSU's Julia Schiller/Abby Stevens, 8-5.



The third and final day of competition will begin Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Dwight Davis Courts.
