Redbirds Strong in Singles at First Day of MVC Individuals

Wichita Kan.-The Illinois State women's tennis team opened the first day of competition at the Missouri Valley Individual Championships advancing six players in singles and one team in doubles to the semi-finals on Saturday.

The Redbirds advanced only one group to the doubles semi-finals with Carolina Abello and partner Kadi Ilves defeating Cory Mattson and Carly Miles of Bradley (8-5).However, the Redbirds bounced back and finished strong, winning six out of seven singles matches in the afternoon.

"Today was a good day for our singles, with almost everyone advancing to the semi-finals," Assistant Coach Cami Hubbs said. "We are proud of the student-athletes and their determination, after losing some close doubles matches this morning."

In singles action, Stefanie Youngberg and Emmie Marx were able to win close matches with Youngberg defeating Kelsey Costales of Evansville (4-6, 6-1, 6-0) and Marx edging out Pheobe Walker of UNI (1-6, 6-2, 6-2). Additionally, Abello and Gabby Phillips were able to clinch two victories. Abello defeated Gabby Phipher of Evansville (6-2, 6-1) and Phillips defeated Bridgette Graff of Bradley (6-0, 6-1). Still in singles, Ilves defeated Karlin Naslund of Creighton (6-1, 6-3) and Phyllis Tigges defeated Corey Mattson of Bradley (6-3, 6-0).

 

 

Play picks up again with the semi-finals on Saturday Morning at 9 a.m. and will continue at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
