The Illinois State women's tennis team finished day one of the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships Friday at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center, advancing in both doubles and singles play.

"It was an okay day," head coach Chris Hooversaid. "We feel really good and excited about how we came out in doubles. We're excited to send a lot of girls to the semifinals tomorrow."

To begin the day, the doubles competition included each competitor's top three teams. Advancing for the Redbirds were Madeliene Baillon and Heather Nisbetwho defeated Northern Iowa's Jordyn Kearney and Sydney Wolfe, 8-2.

Also moving on into tomorrow's competition are Emmie Marx and Kadi Ilves who claimed victory over Evansville's Marina Moreno and Mina Milovic, 8-3. The third pair, Phyllis Tigges and Sierra Stone, also advanced over Northern Iowa's Jieke Stroobant and Erica Medlin, 8-5.

In singles play, Marx defeated Drake's Jordan Eggleston, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, and Ilves beat Evansville's Kelsey Costales, 6-3, 6-0. Baillon also advanced into the semifinals over Drake's Mariel Ante, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Gabby Phillipsdefeated Bradley's Meredeith McDonagh, 6-3, 6-3, and Nisbet claimed victory over Bradley's Ashley Roth, 6-0, 6-3.

Tigges fell to Northern Iowa's Erica Medlin, 6-1, 6-2, and Stone lost to Bradley's Arial Dechter, 6-7 (4-0), 6-1, 6-2. Carolina Abellofell to Southern Illinois's Ariadna Cairo Baza, 7-5, 6-3.


 

 

The MVC Championships will resume Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m., but with a high chance of rain in the St. Louis area, the competition could be delayed or moved indoors due to inclement weather.
