Women's Tennis Brings Home Two Titles at UNI Tournament

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Illinois State women's tennis team finished the Northern Iowa Tournament Sunday, winning three consolation matches and bringing home two titles in singles play.

"We won a lot of the consolation matches and we came away with two singles titles. I think it was a step in the right direction for next weekend," head coach Chris Hoover said. "We're looking forward to getting home and taking a day to rest tomorrow before we gear up and prepare for the Missouri Valley Championships next weekend."

In singles, Kadi Ilves went unbeaten this weekend after defeating Iowa State's Meghan Cassens, 6-4, 6-3, in the Panthers Singles final, making Ilves the Panthers Singles Champion. In UNI Singles, freshman Madeliene Baillon defeated Iowa State's Lydia Green, 7-5, 6-1, making her the UNI Singles Champion and marking her first-career undefeated bracket. Also in UNI Singles, Captain Heather Nisbet defeated Northern Iowa's Sydney Wolfe, 6-1, 6-0, in the finals match.

Phyllis Tigges defeated Milwaukee's Hayley Marshall, 6-0, 6-0, in the Purples Singles final consolation match. Emmie Marx also claimed victory over Upper Iowa's Saki Kawabata in the Gold Singles final consolation match, 6-1, 6-0. In Campanile Singles, Gabby Phillips defeated South Dakota's Ana Vujosevic, 6-1, 6-0, in the finals consolation match.

In doubles play, Baillon and Nisbet fell to Saint Louis's Aspen Cervin and Madeline Jolly, 8-5, in the Gold Doubles final match.

 

 

This week, the Redbirds prepare for the MVC Individual Championships in St. Louis, Mo. The tournament begins Friday, Oct. 4.
