Women's Tennis Finishes Strong After Day One at Northern Iowa Invite

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Illinois State women's tennis team finished day one of the Northern Iowa invite Friday, advancing in both singles and doubles matches.

In singles play, Sierra Stone, Kadi Ilves and Maddie Baillon all went undefeated, 2-0, advancing in their respective semifinals brackets. Stone advanced into the Purple Singles semifinals after defeating Milwaukee's Hayley Marshall, 7-6 (2), 6-4, and Iowa State's Ana Gasparovic, 6-0, 7-5.

Ilves had an undefeated day in Panthers Singles, advancing past Iowa State's Talisa Merchiers, 6-3, 6-1, before beating Saint Louis's Maria Toro Moreno, 6-0, 6-2, to move on to the semifinals. In UNI Singles, Baillon also went 3-0, advancing to the semifinals, first past South Dakota's Nina Barudzic, 6-1, 6-0, and then Drake's Amanda Dick, 6-3, 6-0.

Phyllis Tigges fell to SLU's Aspen Cervin, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (9), before defeating Western Illinois' Jenna Wallace, 6-3, 6-1, in Purples Singles. In Gold Singles play Emmie Marx fell to SLU's Natalia Yacaman, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4), before defeating South Dakota's Dragana Brankovic, 6-2, 6-0. Gabby Phillips fell to Milwaukee's Christina Colarossi, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(5), before defeating WIU's Jessica Callahan, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles play, Marx and Ilves defeated SLU's Toro Moreno/Yacaman, 8-3, in the Purple Doubles bracket. In Gold Doubles, Baillon and Heather Nisbet advanced past Upper Iowa's Saki Kawabata/Paige Olson, 8-4.

The tournament will continue Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
