Kiss and Tigges: Undefeated in Doubles, Advance to Finals

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State senior Aniko Kiss and junior Phyllis Tigges both went undefeated in doubles play on day two of the Redbird Round-up, Saturday on the Gregory Street Tennis Courts. Kiss continued her six-match singles winning streak, while teaming with Tigges is now 6-0 overall in doubles.
Kiss and Tigges are eager to see where day three will take them.
"We are very focused on playing well," said Kiss. "We take this very seriously and hope to remain undefeated as the season continues."
The Redbirds advanced five players to the singles finals of the tournament and partners Kiss and Tigges to the doubles finals Sunday. In singles play, Kiss defeated Stephanie McLouglin of Butler, 6-2, 6-2, and Tigges beat Morehead State's Jessica Montemayor in a three set match, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Meanwhile, Kiss and Tigges posted a victory over Montemayor and partner Alix Young of Morehead State, 8-4.
"We are looking forward to continuing play (Sunday)," said Tigges. "And we're definitely looking forward to getting the chance to show how good we are at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships in a couple weeks."
The team continued to post wins across the board, building on Friday's victories. After going 2-2 in doubles on Friday, the Redbirds improved to a record of 5-4 on Saturday. Team captain Hannah Esker and partner Heather Nisbet started the day by defeating Laura Schull and Kate Panawash of Butler, 8-4, but later fell in a close match to Butler's McLoughlin and Gabrielle Rubenstein, 8-6. Teammates Stefanie Youngberg and Gabby Phillips bested Angelina Qin and Ashley Breitenbach of Butler, 8-6. They finished the day by losing to Karyn Emeralda and Ruta Grinvalde of Chicago State, 8-5.
In the singles rounds, Phillips beat Schull, 6-2, 6-0, and Ashton Nisbet made a comeback in the second and third sets to defeat Kahfii King of Butler, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Esker beat Ruta Grinvalde of Chicago State, 6-2, 6-1 and Youngberg defeated Butler's Breitenbach, 6-2, 6-2. Ashton Nisbet and partner from Morehead State, Shilpa Naruka, fell to competitors from Chicago State, Rosalina Tejoprayitno and Rosalia Tejoprayitno, 8-0. Ashton Nisbet later lost to Panawash of Butler, 6-1, 6-1, and Heather Nisbet lost to Cam Thompson of Butler, 6-4, 7-2.
"We're still learning and figuring it out," said Hoover. "I'm pleased we made it to the finals of a couple flights, and I'm excited to see how it turns out. Hopefully Aniko will continue to play well in singles, and she and Phyllis will be able to keep doubles going. It would be exciting to see the two of them win this weekend."
The Redbirds return to action Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
