MUNCIE, Ind. - Illinois State's Kadi Ilves secured the Singles C Flight title while teaming up with Madeliene Baillion for the B Flight Doubles consolation championship, and the ISU women's tennis team wrapped up the season-opening Ball State Fall Invite Sunday. Sierra Stone also earned a championship by winning the A Flight consolation title.
After a frustrating start Friday, including a weather delay that forced the tournament to move inside, the Redbirds stepped up Saturday and Sunday, advancing four players including both freshmen, Stone and Baillion, sophomore Ilves and junior Emmie Marx, into the semifinals and finals competitions in their respective flights.
"It's difficult to bounce back after a tough first day," Head coach Chris Hoover said. "But we did just that. We bounced back. We saw a great opening weekend for freshmen Sierra Stone and Maddie Baillon, and we're excited to see what we can do this season with them on the squad."
Ilves established an undefeated weekend by claiming a victory in the Singles C Flight finals over Ana Rajkovic of Miami (Ohio), making Illves the Singles C Flight champion. Meanwhile, Stone earned the Singles A Flight consolation titled by defeating Chicago State's Kirsa Utech 6-1,6-0, marking Stone's first-career tournament flight victory.
Carolina Abello fell 6-3, 7-5 to Arkansas State's Biljana Miloshevska in the Singles B Flight finals, and Baillon lost 6-0,6-0 to Miami's Rajkovic in the Singles C Flight semifinals.
In doubles competition, Ilves and Baillon defeated IUPUI's Bobbi Modesto and Rachael Bridegroom, 8-3, in the Doubles B Flight consolation finals.
This week, the Redbirds prepare to travel next weekend to Oxford, Ohio and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
