Women's Tennis Completes Redbird Roundup
September 23, 2012
NORMAL, Ill. - The women's tennis team wrapped up the Redbird Roundup on a cool, windy Sunday morning at the Gregory Street Tennis Complex with a pair of singles titles and one second-place finish.
"I think we are getting there," head coach Chris Hoover said. "This is an improvement over where we were at this point in time last season. I'm most proud of the fact that our team really competed this weekend. We really are fighting hard. Even if we do not win a match, we are still battling. I'm pretty pleased with where we are for this time of the season."
"We are really lucky to have emmie," Hoover said. "For a second semester freshman, she did really well. She made the finals last weekend and then built on it to bring home the title this weekend. Her competition today, Kadi, came in as a freshman and made the finals. The success of both of them bodes really well for our future."
Redbird Stefanie Youngberg won the Singles Flight 2 championship, edging Sammi Hornbarger of Datyon (6-4, 6-1) Saturday morning.
"Stef has come a long way," Hoover said. "She was a walk on as a freshman and has earned her place on this team. Every day, every play she ges more and more confident and I think it showed this weekend."
Additionally, Heather Nisbet fell to Madison Cook of St. Louis (6-3, 6-2) in the Singles Flight 2 consolation championship and Ashton Nisbet was defeated by Carly Miles (6-3, 6-0) in Singles Flight 2 round robin action.
The tennis team next competes at the DePaul Invite, Sept. 28-30, in Chicago, Ill.
